The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) is demanding stringent action against Elvish Yadav following derogatory comments aimed at Chum Darang. The commission has strongly condemned the “derogatory and racist” remarks made by social media influencer Yadav.
APSCW demands action against Elvish Yadav for derogatory remarks on Chum Darang
In a letter sent to the chairperson of the National Commission for Women, APSCW chairperson Kenjum Pakam declared that Elvish Yadav’s comments not only insulted Chum Darang but also disrespected women throughout Northeast India.
What happened?
During a podcast with Big Boss 18 contestant Rajat Dalal, Yadav mocked both Darang and fellow contestant Karan Veer Mehra, stating, “Karan Veer must have had Covid; otherwise, who would find Chum appealing? Who has such bad taste? And there’s vulgarity in the name Chum. Her name is Chum, and she has worked in ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi.'”
Pakam emphasized that such behaviour fosters an environment of fear and intimidation for women from the Northeast seeking careers in the entertainment industry. The commission has called for decisive action against Yadav, urging authorities to address the matter by the law.
She noted that discriminatory actions exacerbate the marginalization of individuals from the region and obstruct their professional ambitions. Reaffirming its dedication to promoting the dignity and rights of women, the commission has called for enhanced measures to combat racial and sexist discrimination against individuals from the Northeast in mainstream media and on public platforms.
Chum’s fans demand an apology
The backlash against both Elvish and Rajat intensified as Chum Darang’s fans demanded an apology for their offensive remarks. However, by speaking out against racism, Chum has become a beacon of hope for many. Her courage and conviction serve as a powerful reminder that we must all stand against discrimination and work toward a culture of empathy, kindness, and understanding.
